JOB TITLE:  Registered Practical Nurse

DEPARTMENT:  Nursing

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Registered Practical Nurse is a qualified member of the Health Care Team and as such, performs their duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

The fundamental role of the Registered Practical Nurse is to give selective care to those Residents who require designated procedure or specialized general nursing care not covered by the Health Care Aides/PSW’s or Nurses Aides. The assignments are determined by the Director of Care or the Registered Nurse in Charge.

In situations where the Resident’s needs are stabilized, the RPN may perform her duties under the indirect supervision of the RN in charge.

In situations where the Resident’s condition is not stable, the duties of the RPN must be supervised by the Director of Care or the RN in charge.

Note: In any situation, the Registered Practical Nurse should perform only those duties for which they have been prepared.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current Registration as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario, Medication Administration Course Certificate and Aseptic Technique.
• Experience in Geriatric, Rehabilitation, or Long-Term Nursing is desirable, or completion of a course in Gerontology at the RPN level.
• Skill in planning, coordination and co-supervising the work of PSW’s, HCA’s & NA’s.
• Maturity and good physical and mental health
• Hold a current certificate in CPR.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

• Completes the initial assessment of the Resident’s needs for the purpose of developing a Care Plan.
• Monitors Resident vitals.
• Assists with the ongoing care of Residents by observation and recording of signs, symptoms and particulars as well as reporting to the RN or Medical Practitioner.
• Assists with the ongoing assessment of the Care Plans, making appropriate alterations under the supervision of the Director of Care or the Registered Nurse.
• Is responsible for administering dressings, doing oral/mouth care, and prevention of, and care for, pressure ulcers.
• Is responsible for administering medications, preparing and supervising steam inhalation, filling portable oxygen units and proper use of oxygen concentrators, care of Resident after death occurs, administration of intramuscular injections, transcribing physician’s orders at Charge Nurse’s discretion.
• Knowledge of isolation protocol
• Cooperates at all times with the provision of social and recreational activities for the Resident, assisting where possible.
• Cooperates with other nursing staff members at all times as well as with office, kitchen, environmental and maintenance staff.
• Reports any unsafe physical conditions, equipment, machines and devices immediately to the RN.
• Ensures that employees work in the manner, and with the protective devices, measures, and procedures required.
• Administers medications to the Residents as per Medication Policy of Groves Park Lodge.
• Works as a Charge Nurse under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
