Tasks

Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions

Address customers' complaints or concerns

Coach colleagues on new methods or work techniques

Obtain special permits and other documents required to transport cargo on international routes

Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment

Specific Job Duties — Dangerous Goods Truck Driver

Operate specialized tank trucks, tractor-trailers, or approved commercial vehicles to transport fuels, chemicals, compressed gases, corrosive materials, flammable liquids, and other regulated dangerous goods.

Verify dangerous-goods shipping documents before departure, including the proper shipping name, UN number, hazard class, packing group, quantity, emergency contact number, and applicable Emergency Response Assistance Plan information.

Confirm that the dangerous goods being transported match the shipping documents, placards, labels, container specifications, and product identification provided by the shipper.

Inspect tanks, pressure vessels, cylinders, trailers, hoses, valves, pumps, couplings, manways, seals, gaskets, discharge lines, and emergency shut-off systems for leaks, damage, corrosion, or defects.

Ensure that the means of containment is approved, properly certified, within its required inspection period, and suitable for the type and quantity of dangerous goods being transported.

Verify that all tank openings, valves, caps, fittings, hoses, and access points are properly closed, sealed, secured, and protected against accidental release.

Display and maintain the correct placards, labels, UN numbers, and dangerous-goods safety marks on the vehicle and containment equipment throughout transportation.

Establish and maintain a controlled safety area during the loading and unloading of dangerous goods to prevent access by unauthorized persons, vehicles, ignition sources, or incompatible materials.

Connect and disconnect product-transfer hoses, pumps, vapour-recovery lines, grounding cables, bonding equipment, and emergency shut-off systems using approved procedures.

Monitor tank capacity, product pressure, temperature, transfer rate, hose condition, valve operation, and vapour levels during loading and unloading to prevent overfilling, leakage, fire, explosion, or contamination.

Stop product-transfer operations immediately when abnormal pressure, leaking connections, damaged equipment, excessive vapour, product incompatibility, or another unsafe condition is detected.

Confirm that incompatible dangerous goods are properly separated and that the load configuration does not create a risk of chemical reaction, fire, explosion, corrosion, or contamination.

Follow approved dangerous-goods routes and comply with applicable restrictions involving tunnels, bridges, ferries, railway crossings, municipal routes, populated areas, and environmentally sensitive locations.

Maintain continuous control and security of dangerous-goods shipments and follow required procedures for authorized stops, parking locations, vehicle attendance, key control, seals, and prevention of theft or tampering.

Conduct specialized en-route inspections to identify leaks, odours, vapours, abnormal pressure, loose fittings, damaged placards, broken seals, shifted containers, or changes in the containment system.

Carry and inspect required emergency-response equipment, including fire extinguishers, spill-control materials, absorbents, warning devices, wheel chocks, protective clothing, chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and respiratory equipment.

Follow product-specific safety procedures relating to static electricity, grounding, bonding, ventilation, pressure control, temperature limits, vapour accumulation, and exposure to toxic or corrosive substances.

Secure and isolate the area following a collision, leak, spill, fire, rollover, damaged container, or anticipated release and prevent public access to the affected area.

Activate emergency shut-off systems and take only those spill-control or emergency measures for which the driver is properly trained, equipped, and authorized.

Notify dispatch, emergency services, CANUTEC, company emergency-response personnel, the shipper, and other required authorities following a spill, release, loss, theft, fire, collision, or dangerous-goods incident.

Provide emergency responders with accurate information concerning the dangerous goods involved, including the shipping name, UN number, hazard class, quantity, containment type, and location of emergency shut-off equipment.

Complete dangerous-goods shipping documents, inspection reports, loading and unloading records, delivery confirmations, equipment-defect reports, spill reports, and incident documentation.

Report and refuse unsafe or non-compliant shipments involving inaccurate documents, missing placards, damaged containers, leaking valves, defective hoses, expired containment certifications, or incompatible products.

Follow required tank-cleaning, purging, decontamination, residue-removal, and change-of-product procedures before carrying a different dangerous good or releasing equipment for maintenance.

Maintain valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification and comply with applicable federal and provincial dangerous-goods, occupational safety, environmental protection, and company operating requirements.
